The Complete Guide to Kerasoy Wax
Everything you need to know about Kerasoy 4120 (pillar) and 4130 (container). Temperatures, fragrance loads, wick sizing, troubleshooting.
What Is Kerasoy?
Kerasoy is a soy-coconut wax blend made in the Netherlands. Two versions: 4120 for pillars and moulds, 4130 for containers.
The coconut content gives you better scent throw than pure soy. The soy gives you a cleaner burn than pure coconut. Best of both.
Kerasoy 4120 (Pillar Wax)
Specs
- Melt point: 57-59°C
- Pour temperature: 65-70°C
- Fragrance load: up to 8%
- Colour: Creamy white
What It's Good For
Pillar candles, moulded candles, shaped candles, wax melts (if you want them firm). Releases cleanly from silicone and polycarbonate moulds.
What It's Not For
Container candles. It's too hard. Won't adhere to glass properly and you'll get wet spots everywhere.
Working With 4120
Heat to 80-85°C to fully melt. Add fragrance at 75°C. Pour at 65-70°C.
For pillars, pour in two stages. First pour at 70°C, let it set with a skin, poke relief holes around the wick, second pour at 65°C. This prevents sinkholes.
Cool slowly. Room temperature, no drafts. Rushing it causes cracks.
Wick Sizing for 4120
Kerasoy 4120 burns hot. Start one size smaller than you'd use for pure soy.
| Pillar Diameter | Suggested Wick |
|---|---|
| 5cm (2") | LX 10-12 |
| 7cm (2.75") | LX 14-16 |
| 10cm (4") | LX 18-20 or double wick |
Always test. These are starting points, not guarantees.
Kerasoy 4130 (Container Wax)
Specs
- Melt point: 45-46°C
- Pour temperature: 55-65°C
- Fragrance load: up to 10%
- Colour: Creamy white
What It's Good For
Container candles in glass jars, tins, ceramic vessels. Sticks to the sides beautifully when poured correctly.
What It's Not For
Pillars or anything freestanding. Too soft. It'll slump.
Working With 4130
Heat to 80-85°C to melt completely. Every crystal needs to dissolve or you'll get uneven texture.
Add fragrance at 75°C. Stir gently for 2 full minutes. The fragrance needs time to bind.
Pour at 55-65°C. Warm your containers first. Cold glass causes wet spots. A few minutes near a radiator or in a low oven (50°C) works.
Pour steadily, not too fast. Leave 1cm at the top for a second pour if you get sinkholes.
Wick Sizing for 4130
The coconut content means it burns slightly hotter than pure soy. Start with these:
| Container Diameter | Suggested Wick |
|---|---|
| 6cm (2.4") | ECO 4-6 |
| 7cm (2.75") | ECO 8-10 |
| 8cm (3.15") | ECO 10-12 |
| 9cm+ (3.5"+) | ECO 14 or double wick |
Troubleshooting Kerasoy
Wet Spots (4130)
The wax pulled away from the glass. Causes:
- Poured too hot (wax shrinks as it cools)
- Cold containers (wax sets before it bonds)
- Cooled too fast (drafts, air conditioning)
Fix: Pour at 55-60°C into pre-warmed containers. Cool at room temperature.
Frosting
White crystalline patches on the surface or sides. This is natural in soy-based wax. It doesn't affect burn or scent.
You can reduce it by pouring cooler (55°C) and not touching the candles while they set. But some frosting is inevitable with natural wax.
Sinkholes
Craters around the wick after setting. The wax contracted as it cooled.
Fix: Poke relief holes when a skin forms. Do a second pour at 5°C cooler than your first pour.
Rough Tops
Bumpy, uneven surface after cooling.
Causes: Air bubbles, pouring too cool, cooling too fast.
Fix: Pour at the higher end of the range (65°C for 4130). Tap the container after pouring to release bubbles. Use a heat gun to smooth the top after setting.
Weak Scent Throw
If cold throw is weak: Cure longer. Kerasoy needs 1-2 weeks for full cold throw.
If hot throw is weak: Check your wick. You need a full melt pool to release fragrance. Also check you added fragrance at 75°C, not hotter.
Curing Kerasoy
Minimum 1 week. Better at 2 weeks. The fragrance needs time to bind fully with the wax.
Don't judge scent throw on a fresh candle. It gets stronger.
Storage
Keep in a cool, dry place. Away from direct sunlight. Kerasoy absorbs moisture from the air, which can cause spitting when you burn it.
Sealed bags or containers are best for long-term storage.
