The Quick Answer
A 1kg block of wax makes approximately:
- 5-6 large candles (30cl/300ml containers)
- 7-8 medium candles (20cl/200ml containers)
- 10-12 small candles (9cl/90ml containers)
But the exact number depends on your container size, wax density, and how much fragrance you add.
The Formula
Here's how to calculate it for any container:
Container volume (ml) × 0.86 = wax needed (grams)
The 0.86 factor accounts for wax density (most candle wax is about 86% the weight of water by volume).
Example: 20cl Container
200ml × 0.86 = 172g of wax per candle
1000g ÷ 172g = 5.8 candles
Account for some waste: 5 candles comfortably, 6 if you're careful.
Don't Forget Fragrance
If you're adding 8% fragrance oil, that's part of your total weight.
For a 172g fill:
- Wax: 158g
- Fragrance oil: 14g
- Total: 172g
So 1kg of wax plus ~130g of fragrance oil makes about 6 medium containers.
Yield by Wax Type
Different waxes have slightly different densities:
- Soy wax: 0.85-0.87 density
- Coconut wax: 0.82-0.85 density
- Beeswax: 0.95-0.97 density
Beeswax is denser, so you get slightly fewer candles per kilo. Coconut blends are lighter, so slightly more.
Account for Waste
You'll lose some wax to:
- Wax left in the melting pot
- Top-up pours for sinkholes
- Test candles and mistakes
Budget for 10-15% waste when starting out. As you get more experienced, you'll waste less.
Quick Reference Table
For soy/coconut blend at 8% fragrance:
- 9cl container: ~12 candles per kg
- 20cl container: ~5-6 candles per kg
- 30cl container: ~4 candles per kg
