Getting the Best from Your Melts
Wax melts are simple, but a few tips will help you get stronger scent throw and longer life from each one.
How Wax Melts Work
Unlike candles, wax melts don't burn. A warmer gently heats the wax until it melts and releases fragrance into the air.
Because there's no flame, the fragrance doesn't burn off. It evaporates slowly over multiple uses.
Choosing a Warmer
Electric Warmers
Pros: Consistent temperature, safer (no flame), often have timers.
Cons: Need electricity, vary in heat output.
Look for warmers that reach 55-65°C. Too cool = weak scent. Too hot = burns through melts too fast.
Tea Light Warmers
Pros: No electricity needed, often cheaper, nice ambiance.
Cons: Open flame, can overheat melts, inconsistent temperature.
Use 4-hour tea lights, not 8-hour. Longer tea lights burn hotter and can scorch your melts.
How Much Wax to Use
Start with one cube (about 25-30g) for a small warmer. Two cubes for larger dishes or bigger rooms.
More wax doesn't always mean more scent. Too much can actually reduce throw because the melt pool doesn't heat evenly.
How Long Do They Last?
One wax melt cube typically gives 8-12 hours of scent across multiple uses.
This varies based on:
- Fragrance concentration in the melt
- Room size and airflow
- Warmer temperature
- How long you run it each time
When to Change Your Melt
The wax itself doesn't disappear - only the fragrance evaporates. Change your melt when:
- You can no longer smell it while it's melting
- The scent is noticeably weaker than when new
- It's been through 3-4 melt cycles without fragrance
Removing Used Wax
The Freezer Method
Let wax harden completely. Put the warmer dish in the freezer for 10-15 minutes. The wax contracts and pops out easily.
The Cotton Ball Method
While the wax is still melted, drop in cotton balls. They absorb the liquid wax. Let cool and remove.
Don't Pour Down the Drain
Wax solidifies and causes blockages. Always dispose of solid wax in the bin.
Storage Tips
Store unused melts in a cool, dark place. Heat and light can cause fragrance to evaporate even before use.
Keep them in their original packaging or an airtight container. Wax absorbs other odours.
